Awkward Hospital Visit of the Day

Here's a snippet of The Conversation of the Day from a local hospital:

Me: Hi, ________. My name is Hannah and I'm the new intern over at Our Saviors. I saw your name on our visitation list, and wanted to stop by and say hi.

Her: Oh, hi. You were here yesterday.

Me: Oh, I don't think that was me.

Her: No, you brought me communion. Well maybe not. I think it might have been a man who came.

Me: Well, it's nice to meet you, _______. Thanks for letting me come.

Her: So do you just go around to all the rooms and see people?

Me: No, I'm a pastor at Our Saviors on Ellsworth, and I get to make special visits to people from the church.

Her: Well, you can't be a pastor. You're too young. How old ARE you?

Me: 24.

Her: Ha. I have grandkids older than you.

Me: Uh...well, I am pretty young, but I'm excited to be here.

Her: So you're just around and the other pastors preach?

Me: Actually, I get to preach too. I'm preaching this weekend.

Her: Oh, well good luck with that. Make sure you pray for me.

Oh the age thing! S/he was an age-ist! Well, you handled it well. I know I've done double-takes when a doctor seems younger than me. There must be something in the human psyche that says "well, professionals should be older than you." Just be glad you weren't patted on the head. Oh, and I've been called "kiddo" this past week, so once again, you are in good company. And just think how much older than you I am. When does it end?

Ah, Hannah... your pastoral care TA is proud. :) Nice convo -- I hate to say it, but I feeling there will be more in of those in your future! I've had a few doozies in my first 3 months as a pastor -- my favorite being: (said to my husband): "um, do we call women pastors something different? Like pastoress?" UGH. :)

Continue the good work in AZ! Thanks for the pics from Noah's ordination! Thinking of you! Jen Q
